2016-November Meeting Update: Wool Applique

November Meeting: WOOL APPLIQUE
November 28, 2016, Beechwood Church Lodge, 6pm – 9pm

Learn from your fellow guild members the fun of working with wool. You will be provided with a pattern and wool to make a small project. You need to bring a small basic sewing kit: scissors, small pins (applique or the smallest you have) size 18 or 20 chenille needles (we will have some to borrow if you don’t have them), thimble and anything else you like to have while hand sewing. We will be demonstrating with perle cotton and wool threads. If you have some already, we would appreciate your bringing your own threads. Otherwise the teachers will supply your thread. You may also want to use embroidery thread if you are used to that.

Thirty-seven members signed up for a specific project at the October meeting. Until Monday October 31, you may still select a specific project by e-mailing Kathy Mueller at

Choices are: Project #1 a small strawberry pattern suitable for turning into a pincushion (5 spots left), project #2 a small picture of a bird and basket (3 spots left) project #3 St. Nick (3 spots left) and project 4 a penny rug candle mat. (class is filled but we will start a new table for guests and members who did not sign up.

Kits are free for members and $5.00 for guests. We will have enough kits for 8 tables of 8 students…or until our wool runs out.

Hope to see you there!

DEBBIE GRIFKA/ESCH HOUSE QUILTS – Big Red Quilters Guild is pleased to welcome DEBBIE GRIFKA from Ann Arbor, Michigan ( as our speaker.  A lifelong sewist and maker, Debbie began quilting in 2002, finding inspiration in works of Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr, Gwen Marsten, and Jacquie Gering and others in the modern quilt world. Debbie immediately found her way to her local Modern Quilt Guild, where she served as President.  Debbie describes her style as graphic, modern minimalism, making quilts with clean lines and bold shapes as her focus…whether the colors are deep and intense or low contrast neutrals, whether pieced or applique. Debbie’s work has been displayed at QuiltCon, Paducah/AQS, and House Quilt Festival and featured in various books and magazines. Her first book LINES BY DESIGN QUILTS was published in 2016. Having found her voice in the modern quilt movement, she shares her love of quilting thru lectures and workshops, and is an avid member of the fast growing modern quilt movement online thru many sources such as Instagram and Facebook.  We were treated to an overview of her quilting journey on line and samples of her work follows:

Raffle drawings went to:

Barb Bredemeier – Special thread from Smith-Owens

Peggy Claire – Fat Quarters from Debbie Grifka

Barb Schippa – Pattern from Debbie Grifka

Esther Tilton – tool

Pat thanked everyone and dismissed us about 9:00 PM, followed by tear down and clean up

Autumn in Shipshewana

A timely departure, an easy-going drive, puffy cumulus clouds against a brilliant cobalt blue blue sky, warm orange pumpkins, golden corn stalks ready for harvest, quiet country roads, black horse-drawn buggies, a Thresher Dinner at a real Amish farm, an Amish quilt presentation by historian and author Rebecca Haarer, with ample time for shopping at Yoders, The Cotton Corner, Lollys and a Little Bit of Lollys……..spent with old friends and new…..equals a wonderful autumn day spent in northern Indiana Amish country.  If you went, you are still basking in the glow.  If you didn’t, you wish you had.

2016 – October – Debbie Grifka Class & Guild Meeting Program:

Did you get to meet Debbie Grifka of Esch House Quilts last week at the West MI Quilters Guild show? She had a vendor’s booth there and told me several of our guild members had already stopped by and mentioned they were taking our class on October 24. Debbie was selling her book and patterns and had a lot of her bright and lively  quilts on display. She even had the slats pillows that we will be making.

We do still have several spots in the class available. Cost is $35.00 plus the purchase of her book Lines by Design.  The book will be available in class. There is a little precutting to make the class go faster. I did mine in under an hour and that included ironing my fabric. The class is on October 24, from 9:00-4:00, in the lodge at Beachwood Church. Call Kathy Mueller at 616-399-4685 to join this fun group.

Don’t forget, Debbie will also be our program speaker at our meeting on the evening of October 24 when she will share her story of becoming a modern quilt maker and designer.

Looking for something to do October 22?

It’s not too late! There are a few seats left on the bus trip to Amish country. We have a fun day planned with time for shopping,  an Amish thresher dinner prepared and served at a real Amish farm, and a quilt trunk show and presentation by Amish historian and author Rebecca Haarer. Step back in time and enjoy the rolling northern Indiana landscape filled with fall harvests, horse and buggys on the roadway, and a slower pace of life, leaving the driving to someone else. For more information see the Shipshewanna Bus Trip registration forms under the FORMS & DOCUMENTS tab.
