2018 March News & Sew-in Reminder

The National Day of Quilting event held on March 17, was a wonderful day of sewing and fun! Many thanks to Barb Schippa for organizing!! Thanks to everyone who helped with the day, donated prizes and attended!  You’ll find pictures on Facebook and on the web site.

Sew in is Monday, March 26th! Bring your projects, machines, handwork and join in!

Don’t have a project to work on? We have a completely optional service project for you! At the March sew-in we will also be set up to decorate supper bags for Kid’s Food Basket ( https://www.kidsfoodbasket.org/ ).   Kid’s Food Basket is a West Michigan non-profit who’s mission is  ” Empowering communities to attack childhood hunger so that young people can learn and live well.”    You can visit the web site for more information but basically they serve 800 sack suppers per day to children in need at 5 schools in the Holland area.

The children love to have decorated bags so that is a fun and easy way to contribute. I’m told that the children often save the bags and hang them on their bedroom walls.
A local church has provided the bags to decorate.  We can decorate by ironing on fabric scraps or by coloring. There will be some fabric with fusible attached provided but if you have any scraps with fusible, bring them! There will be a few irons set up to use. Bringing your crafty scissors will be helpful too. If you would rather color the bags, bring your favorite coloring tools (no paint please).   After the sew-in, the bags will be returned to the church that provided them with a note saying they were decorated by BRQG members!  The church will get them to Kids Food Basket for us.

Red &White quilts Hot Trends!

03A97D85-DD30-4B4B-A121-A02130A8214D.jpegRemember those beautiful red and white quilts we did as a challenge back in June 2016??  Well, we were ahead of the trend, or perhaps we established the trend. According to the latest issue of Elle Decor magazine (March 2018, page 34), Calvin Klein’s reintroducing the timeless classic of red and white quilts into his interiors.

Well, we quilters knew these would make lovely additions to our interiors, whether Calvin agreed or not. If you haven’t already, break out those red and white quilts and hang them on a ladder, or across your beds. And cherish all the work you put into those beauties!

Big Red Quilters’ Guild News

November Meeting: Our fun-packed November BRQG  sew-in/meeting will be held at the Beechwood Lodge on Nov. 27th. You will not want to miss this meeting! We will start with refreshments at 6:30, program starts at 7 with a viewing of the Row Robin Quilts. Some quilts will be completely finished, quilted and bound. Others will just be assembled to show all six rows.

Next, we will have a lesson on making the smallest of quilts; a quilted postcard that can actually be sent through the mail. Warning! These little quilts can become addictive! They can be quite quick and simple or they can be works of art. They are the perfect greeting card that shows you really care. Kathy Mueller and Dee Dee Hanson will bring samples and instruct you in construction. You will each make a card, ready for stitching, and bring them home to complete.

You will see several options to finish and mail your card. Dee Dee will bring beautiful fabric to make the sunset card that many of you saw at the program table in October. Kathy will show how to make a landscape or other design out of your scraps.
The guild will provide a base to build your card upon and scraps of pre-fused fabric. We will show options for the message and address side of the card including a rubber stamp to use which looks authentic, but old.

You will need to bring: Sharp scissors, any scraps of fused fabric you are willing to share and paper, a glue stick, a small cutting mat and rotary cutter and ruler. If you have previously made postcard quilts, please bring them to show. Anyone with a small ironing surface and iron, please bring those… we can share.  Please do not bring a sewing machine to this particular sew-in – we don’t think we’ll have space.    (… from Kathy Mueller)

Thanks to those who signed up to bring refreshments:   Nancy Yetman, Andrea Aumick, Barb Bredemeier, Esther Tilton and Lorelle Eberly.

Some BRQG news

Making a Difference:  It has come to my attention that this group is overwhelmed with donations.  If you have some extra fabric or would like to make a donations to help other quilters here is an option suggested by a member:  “Our quilting guild friends in Santa Rosa California have lost their fabric supplies in the recent fires. The guild would be so grateful for donations of fat quarters to help them get back to their piecing. Consider sending a fat quarter in an envelope with 3 stamps to: Santa Rosa Quilt Guild, P.O. BOX 9251, Santa Rosa California 95405 … Thank you everyone .”
