July 19,2021 Meeting Information

Greetings Big Red Quilters’ Guild!
Just a note to say “hello” and to remind everyone that we have a great meeting lined up for Monday, July 19!  We hope you can join us and catch up with friends and maybe find a little fresh inspiration!

Here are the nuggets you need to know!

Who:  Members (and friends of quilting)

What:  Monthly meeting PLUS a program with Kathy Jones from New Era, MI, who will share her trunk show, “Mixing It Up”, which reflects her world travels.

When:  Monday, July 19, 6:30 pm social time, 7 pm meeting and program

Where:  Tiara Yachts, 725 E 40th St, Holland, MI 49423 (enter from 40th St., park in the lot–yes, even in the “reserved” spots…).  We will be meeting indoors, so you do NOT need to bring a chair!  Bring a water bottle (or whatever) if you’d like a beverage during the evening.

Why:  Because you LOVE quilting and are anxious to learn more! How (much):  Program is free for members, $5 for guests.
Other things to know:

  • Show ‘n Tell:  We will have time set aside for show ‘n tell on Monday, and because we KNOW everyone has much to share, please bring only one or two of your recent projects–we will keep chipping away at this until we’ve caught up on everyone’s hard work!
  • Paper Pieced “Sisterhood” blocks:  Patterns and directions will be available, one per person, at the meeting so that everyone has the chance to make a contribution to our quilt!  (It’s so cute!!!)
  • Retreat update:  We have a couple of spots open for our September 21-23 guild retreat at Tiara’s Corporate Center on Lake Macatawa.  If you are interested in joining us, contact Barb Bredemeier for details at 626 212-6078 or barb.bredemeier@gmail.com .
  • Virtual Quilt Show:  The Lighthouse Quilt Guild is showing their quilts this year online as part of the Coast Guard Festival and will not be doing an in-person show. Please enjoy scrolling through the show this year by going to Lighthousequilters.org and clicking on the link on the front page. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite 3!  (Note:  this show is not yet live, but appears to  align with the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, July 30-August 8.)
  • Placemats for Meals on Wheels:  Link to an info sheet with the particulars is on the website. Pressing Matters Quilt Shop has kindly agreed to act as our drop-off spot for placemats and has already received some finished placemats!  Thank you to Pressing Matters and to the early quilters for their submissions!

Hoping you are able to be with us on Monday.  More to come by email soon!  Until then, remember you can always visit our website (link below) for information about what is going on…and coming up!  (with sincere thanks to our webmaster, Janet Haines!)
Take good care,
Bridget Morel

A Message From our Membership Chair

Happy Friday to you all!
Sending you the follow up information from a presentation offered earlier this week by the Lakeshore Museum Center in Muskegon on research into quilts in the African American Tradition, specifically, the work of Rosie Lee Wilkins.  What I took away from the presentation was even bigger than this important topic, though, as the presenter, Marsha MacDowell, Michigan State University professor and curator of the MSU Museum, Folk Arts and Quilt Studies, shared wonderful insights about the MSU museum, its collection, its practice of gathering and preserving quilts…I could go on and on.  Made me so very curious!

The Rosie Lee Wilkins exhibition will be available at the Lakeshore Museum Center through April 24, https://lakeshoremuseum.org/who-is-rosie-lee-wilkins/.  You can look at the presentation on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIqMsp8C1mY&feature=youtu.be  Also take a look at the link below on a Hand Quilting program the museum is offering!

Whatever quilt-y things you’re doing on this wonderful, sunny day, I hope that you’re enjoying and celebrating our art!  (Great day for matching colors, don’t you think?)  I’m looking at my last pot of paperwhites exploding with fresh enthusiasm for the spring that is around the corner!

Thinking of you all…take good care,
Bridget Morel

2020 Nov 16 – Zoom meeting minutes

Big Red Quilt Guild November 16, 2020, Zoom Meeting

Betsy Muir, president, opened the Zoom meeting at 7:00 p.m. from Kris Kennedy’s home. Betsy and Kris have created several Christmas quilts that they showed the group with the help of their husbands, Jim Muir and Roger Kennedy. We thank these men for their outstanding quilt holding—and quilt walking!
Among the quilts displayed were those featuring Tumbling Trees, gnomes, Christmas trees, snowflakes, the Milky Way, gnomes with Twister snowflakes, Christmas houses with trees, and one with three trees
and a gnome.
Kris also gave information about where to find patterns, one of them free, for several of the quilts:
1) Tumbling Trees table runner by http://www.thefatquartergypsy,com (uses a 30 degree triangle template)
2) Twister Gnomes by http://www.aroundthebobbin.com also available on Amazon (uses Lil’ Twister tool)
3) House table runner from Modern Holiday Table Runner pattern—download from Fat Quarter Shop (on sale now and includes several holiday runners)
4) Scandinavian Tomto pattern (1 large gnome with three large trees) download from http://www.rebeccamaedesigns.com
5) Jelly Snowflake Mystery Quilt—free from Fat Quarter Shop Jolly Jabber Quilting Blog https://blog.fatquartershop.com/jelly-snowflake-mystery-quilt/

Before the meeting, Betsy had emailed all BRQG members a copy of the proposed budget put together by our treasurer, Karen Keip, and approved by the BRQG board. Betsy called for a vote on the budget; it was unanimously approved by the 31 members in attendance via Zoom.

Then the program moved to the four kits that had been distributed to BRQG members who signed up for the Make and Keep ornaments project. The ornaments could be used to decorate a Christmas tree or as gift tags on packages.

Kris began with the felt tree topped with a gold star. She suggested using tissue paper behind the star when stitching and using pompoms or buttons for decorations on the tree.

For the Scottie dog ornament, Kris suggested tracing around the pattern on tissue paper or freezer paper, attaching the paper to the fabric and then stitching around the dog shape, leaving an opening in the belly area for turning. She advised to be patient when turning so as not to poke a hole through the stitching. Betsy placed her dog shape on the bias of the fabric for a slightly different look. Be sure to clip the fabric near the stitching for the neck and the tail of the dog in order to make a good dog shape.

Betsy then discussed the three fabric trees. She used Steam and Seam Two to stabilize the tree fabric. Only one ribbon is included in the kit, so makers will need to use some of their own ribbons for two of the trees. Be sure to fold the ribbon in half and enclose the ends between the fabric pieces of the tree. Kris used garland on her tree while Betsy used rickrack for decorating hers.

The last project involved holly leaves. Betsy traced the pattern on freezer paper, ironed it on fabric, cut out the shape and stitched around the edges, leaving an opening for the stuffing. She made one leaf of fabric and one of felt. Either pompoms or small red buttons could be used for the berries. She
suggested sewing the pompoms on rather than gluing them.

Kris thanked Nora Slikkers and Carole McLean for preparing the kit materials, and the BRQG board for packaging and delivering the kits to the members. Betsy noted that some of the ornaments would be good projects for making with kids and/or grandkids.
The Zoom meeting ended at 7:35 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Lorelle Eberly

BRQG News

Greetings fellow Big Red Quarantine Quilters!
We hope that this finds you well and enjoying (as you can) this time of staying home a bit more!  We hope that it has renewed your love of fabrics and quilting and  that you’re all ready for new content from your Big Red Quilters Guild!  Following is an update on meetings and programming.  At the end are two questions to help us gauge interest and comfort in gathering in July.  If you would be so kind as to respond to these questions, it will help guide us as we prepare to meet.
Meetings.  The Board met today, and based on most recent direction from the State of Michigan, we are canceling our June 15, in-person meeting.  That said, we are looking forward to the following meeting activity:

    • Rug demonstration.  Betsy will demonstrate a jelly roll rug technique that results in a rectangular rug, and
    • Village Challenge.  Kris will demonstrate the House block for our Guild’s Village challenge,
  • BOTEOM Lost and Found.  Finally, Betsy and Kris will host a “Block of the Every Other Month” Lost and Found Gallery!  We have blocks left behind at our last meeting (could that possibly be February???) that need to be returned to their rightful creators.  You won’t want to miss this!

    • We will follow all guidance provided by the State of Michigan regarding the safety and comfort of our members.
  • Your Program Committee is hard at work finalizing programming for remainder 2020 to include as much content as originally planned as possible!  More to come on that!
BRQG Village is growing!

Pulsecheck.  In an effort to gauge how we can best put our programming forward, please send an email to bigredquiltersguild@gmail.com by Monday, June 1, and let us know your interest in joining us for the July meeting and/or workshop.  We will plan to adhere to all guidance provided for meetings by the State of Michigan.  Additionally, we are working to provide the Monday meeting/lecture via Facebook Live.

BRQG Update

Greetings to you all,

Betsy Muir, President, and the Board of the Big Red Quilters Guild wanted to let you know that our April and May meetings and activities are cancelled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.  This includes the Tiled Backgrounds workshop scheduled for Tuesday, April 28.  The Board will make a decision regarding future meetings in early May based on public health guidance.
  • If you’d like to look forward, we are hopeful that June 15 will bring us together for a meeting with speaker Denniele Bohannon (Where The Poppies Grow) presenting a program, “Forty Years in the Making.”
  • We will advise on spring program and workshop rescheduling at a later date.
In the meantime, continue to reach out and connect with your fellow quilters from a distance!  While we don’t have opportunities to gather in-person, every contact you make means so much!  At the same time that we reach out to each other, know that any sewing that you might be doing for the Coronavirus crisis, (masks and scrub caps, gowns … more masks) is making a difference!
  • If you are sewing for the crisis, it might be interesting to keep track of numbers of items you make.  We’ll put out a call for numbers when things calm down and make a total for the Guild.
  • If you are interested in sewing for the cause, there is a Facebook Group, West Michigan OSMS – COVID-19 Open Source Medical Supplies, which is helping connect the talents of makers with requests from hospitals and nursing homes, including Spectrum and Holland hospitals.  They are presently seeking individuals to sew masks, surgical scrub caps and gowns.  On their Facebook page, volunteers are asked to complete a form including how can you help.  If sewing, you are asked:  what you are interested in sewing, whether you need materials, whether you would be interested in pick up or delivery of materials or products.  After completing the form, patterns and instructions are available as well as drop-off locations and delivery information.
    • The Facebook group is pretty active, so it creates the atmosphere of working together!  While not the same as a retreat or Sew-In, it definitely helps to create a feeling of community.

Know that we’re missing you all…the camaraderie, the learning, the fun…but that we will all benefit from Staying Home and Staying Safe!

Take care!

Block of the Every Other Month

All,

The times are uncertain…looking for “what’s next” is a daily (or hourly!) event.  Never have we found ourselves with so much “discretionary” time!  Or at least it may feel like that…or it may not…this experience is different for everyone, I suspect!  🤔
The purpose of this email is to send along the next steps of the BOEOM Challenge so you can take advantage of the time you might have, whenever you have it. IMPORTANT NOTE:  Even though we might be able to work ahead, completed blocks and final project end date remains the same as originally planned–October.
Attached, please find the instructions for the two remaining blocks as well as photographs of Betsy’s blocks.  We’ll get these up on the website soon as well!  I’ll also include the links for these online just to make sure everyone has access (we don’t need any additional technical issues, do we?  🙄)
Sending hugs to you all…the virtual kind…along with prayers for everyone’s health and safety.  Take care…more to come soon!
Bridget

Mask Making Opportunities and a Note!

Dear Quilting Friends,

I hope that this email finds you and yours doing well in these trying times.  I’m writing to let you know of an opportunity to share our energies with the larger West Michigan community.  I suspect you’ve heard about making masks to help in the fight against the COVID-19, and you may already be working on this cause for a local hospital or other caregiving entity.
Both Holland Hospital and Spectrum Health are accepting handmade masks, per information offered on their websites.  We would invite you to consider this opportunity as a chance to contribute to the cause (and possibly make a dent in that stash… 😉).
Note that fabrics should be pre-washed before assembly, as we are uncertain how the masks will be sterilized/sanitized for use (read:  it likely will include moisture and heat!)  Following is information from each hospital organization, including the link to their “how-to-help” page for COVID-19 as well as a link to the instructions for their preferred pattern.
A closing thought as we consider the days and weeks ahead…and the uncertainty in all of this:  how blessed we are to have a hobby that consumes us, a hobby that we can share with others, and a hobby that produces articles that are at once beautiful and useful.  We can express ourselves and connect with the recipient or admirer alike.  It’s a gift to have quilting in our lives always, but maybe, especially, in times of challenge.  First Lady Grace Coolidge is credited with the below saying…if you haven’t seen it, perhaps it will nudge you to appreciate quilting just a bit more!

“Everyone should be taught to
sew, not merely for the sake of
making something, but as an
accomplishment which may prove
a stabilizer in time of
perplexity or distress.

Many a time when I need to hold
myself firmly, I have taken up a
needle – a sewing needle, some
knitting needles, or a crochet
hook. Whatever its form or
purpose, it often proved to

be as the needle
of a compass,
keeping me to the course.”

– First Lady Grace Coolidge

Sending our very best for your comfort and productivity (!) in the days ahead.  We’re thinking of you!
